Premiering in September 1999, the original NBC series The West Wing built an instant cult following with its seemingly realistic weekly excursions into the inner sanctums of the White House. The series became such a hit that some pollsters claimed that certain people actually believed Jed Bartlet was the real president (although, if true, this is more of a negative reflection on the intelligence of the electorate, and not necessarily an indication of West Wing’s realism). But regardless, the truth of the matter is that West Wing definitely strikes a chord with certain audiences, providing entertaining brew of action, suspense, and drama on a weekly basis…

Seasoned Hollywood actor Martin Sheen plays the lead role of President Jed Bartlet. The day-to-day affairs of Bartlet’s administration are run by a number of individuals who surround him, among them are: Claudia “C.J.” Cregg (Allison Janney), Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Leo McGarry (John Spencer), and Charlie Young (Dule Hill). West Wing follows these dedicated staffers as they work extended hours behind-the-scenes to help keep the White House running smoothly. Along the way, the stress of the job and the characters’ personal lives make for an interesting glimpse into what many believe is an accurate portrayal of a real-life White House administration…

The West Wing (Season 3) DVD offers a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere “Manchester: Part 1″ in which C.J. mistakenly reveals during her press conference that President Bartlet suffers from a medical condition, prompting an onslaught of media attention regarding the president’s health. In gearing up to spin the revelation, the staffers discuss whether or not Bartlet should apologize to the nation for failing to reveal the problem. Meanwhile, Abbey is not pleased when she learns that Jed has decided to run for re-election… Other notable episodes from Season 3 include “The Indians in the Lobby” in which a pair of Indians announce their plans to stand in the lobby of the Department of Interior until they receive an answer on their 15-year-old application to buy back lost Indian lands, and “Hartsfield’s Landing” in which the staffers begin to execute their presidential primary strategy (beginning in New Hampshire) in their plan to win Bartlet’s re-election…

SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (1957), a Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis steamroller about the ruthless rules of professional survival and success in the Big Apple.

This film is shot only 8 years after Criss Cross (1949) in which Lancaster again plays the lead role but Tony Curtis shows up for a few seconds, perhaps in his first appearance ever on screen, as the samba partner of an anonymous woman at the club scene. (IMBD claims he is not credited but I remember a tiny little “Anthony Curtis” mentioned somewhere on the credits list.) So SWEET SMELL is a testimony to the way Curtis’s career has catapulted within those 8 years.

The movie is replete with fantastic exchanges and sharp lines revealing character and intricate plot, and why are we surprised?

It was penned by the legendary Ernest Lehman (whom we have unfortunately lost in July 2005) who also wrote classics like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf, North by Northwest, Sabrina, West Side Story, Sound of Music and many others. Lehman is the only screenwriter that Academy honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Burt Lancaster is J.J. Hunsecker, a power-maniac national rumor columnist with 60 million readers who can bend grown men out of shape with a few choice lines in his daily column.

Tony Curtis is the sleazy but dangerous bottom-feeder press agent Sidney Falcon who will do anything to be the top dog in a “dog eat dog world.”

When JJ asks Falco to stop guitarist Steve Dallas from carrying on a love affair with his sister, Falco unleashes a web of deceit that ultimately fires back.

But too many lives are bruised in a no-holds-barred power game where blackmail is common currency and all is fair.

An uncompromising courageous look at the gritty underbelly of New York’s media and publicity empire.

An unconditional 9 out of 10.

Nominated for 2 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes, including Best TV Series – Drama, Felicity gathered a large cult following in its short four season stint. Premiering on the WB network in September 1998, the show (along with Dawson’s Creek) helped ignite a firestorm of highly successful original series on behalf of the upstart network, with such hit shows as Angel (1999), Gilmore Girls (2000), and Smallville (2001). The brainchild of writer J.J. Abrams (creator of the two hit series Alias and Lost), Felicity follows the life of a recent high school graduate, not through seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4, but through Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. Similar in genre to its contemporary, Dawson’s Creek, Felicity’s cast is of approximately the same age, but the setting is college instead of high school…

The Felicity (Season 4) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere “The Declaration” in which the summer before Felicity’s senior year is coming to an end. Felicity’s father is putting a lot of pressure of Felicity to decide what she’s going to do with her life and even goes so far as to accuse her of wasting her college years. Meanwhile, Ben has decided he wants to become a doctor, thus forcing him to spend at least one more year in school to satisfy the pre-med requirements. His contrasting attitude from that of Felicity drives a wedge between them, and Felicity begins spending more and more time with Noel… Other notable episodes from Season 4 include “Oops… Noel Did It Again” in which Ben must deal with the impending death of his father while Noel reveals the truth about his and Felicity’s relationship, and “Raising Arizona” in which Ben decides to transfer to the University of Arizona in order to be near Lauren and his unborn child…

Below is a list of episodes included on the Felicity (Season 4) DVD:
