Head-set on Embarrassing Myself

January 18th, 2010

My job is not stressful, I would say, just demanding. I answer the phone for a brokerage house on Wall Street. I enjoy my job, but I was having a problem keeping up with the volume of calls that come across my desk everyday. My supervisor noticed that I was having problems and suggested that they could provide me with a headset, if I thought it might help. I figured it would be worth a shot, so I asked for one. The day I got it, I was almost instantly in heaven. I had two hands free to write memorandums, input data, and handle the transfer of incoming calls. This headset was corded, but the cord to the phone was sufficiently long enough to not be in my way. My day flew by and I was impressed at how valuable a piece of equipment the headset had already become. It was lightweight, out of my face and easy to wear…so easy, in fact, that by the end of the first day, I forgot I had it on.

On the train ride home, I thought I noticed a few people staring at me. I chalked it up to paranoia and lost myself in a book I brought to read. I have a fairly long commute, so I am usually able to get in a few chapters on the way to my apartment. I normally find it easy to get absorbed into my reading, but today was different. I felt like all eyes were on me. By the time my stop came around, I was sufficiently creped out and ready to unwind in the comfort of my own home.

When I entered through the door to my apartment, my wife was in the kitchen. She came out to say “Hi” and started laughing at me. Of course, my reaction of, “What?” only made her laugh harder. She managed to control herself long enough to say, “Ground control to Major Tom…come in, Major Tom”. Then it hit me. I had been wearing this headset, with the cord dangling behind me into obscurity, the entire way home.

Get the Most Amount of Money with the Least Amount of Effort

January 18th, 2010

A common goal is to get the most amount of money with the least amount of effort. This is not to say that hard work is to be avoided or that a person could sleep past noon and still strike it rich. To get most amount of money takes hard work and a lot of effort. However, to spend less effort on trying to get the most amount of money there three critical steps to the process.

Research: Do your research and use the Internet as well as the public library. The Internet is the fastest way to search and find information. However, completing research in a library can benefit you by receiving the assistance of a librarian who can guide you in a direction you had not considered.

Consider the field that your business or service falls under. Use a web directory to find other companies in that field. Review their websites and make note of their good and bad qualities.

Plan: After completing your research start putting the pieces together. Outline your strategy. Consider how to transition from one step to another. Make note of the things you liked about how others presented their product or information. Do not copy or plagiarize their information but let it inspire you. Also make note of the negatives and avoid making these errors yourself.

Advertise: Call attention to your product or service and proclaim the qualities or advantage. First take the time to brainstorm your product or service. What are the qualities? Advantages? Strengths? Consider writing articles, using free web classifieds, and link exchanges.

By focusing on research, planning advertising; you save yourself time and money. You do yourself more harm by jumping in and going for it then you do by having the patience to research, plan and advertise.

Increase your eBay Profits the Easy Way

January 11th, 2010

Sometimes the simplest things can boost the number of visitors and bids to your auction listings and increase your eBay profits.

Robert G. Allen, author of Multiple Streams of Internet Income, writes, “If you are going to play online, then act like your life depended on it. Embed your web address and e-mail address in your off-line brochures, on your business cards, in every marketing message, and in every advertisement you place.”

This advice rings true for eBay, Yahoo!, and Amazon auction sellers as well. You need to make it easy for web-surfers to find your current auction listings. The more visitors your auctions have, the higher your eBay profits.

Create a signature file and add a link to your auctions with every e-mail that you send. Most e-mail programs will allow the reader to click on any phase that begins with http://. Your signature should include a short marketing message that directs the reader to your current auction listings. Here’s an example:

STAR WARS COMIC BLOWOUT! – All auctions open at 99 cents with NO RESERVE
Click –> http://auctions.yahoo.com/user/fearlessdf

To create a signature file in Microsoft Outlook Express 6 simply:

>On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Signatures tab.

>To create a signature, click New and then either enter text in the Edit Signature box or click File, and then find the text or HTML file you’d like to use.

>Select the Add signatures to all outgoing messages check box.

Additionally, you should consider promoting your auctions by including a link with every post you make on bulletin board discussions (such as Yahoo! eGroups), news groups, and in the various free classified ad listing services around the internet. According to Allen, these venues can often create the opportunity “to reach huge numbers of people, multiple times, over a long period of time.”

Make sure you include the web address to your auction listings on the thank-you note you include in the package sent to your winning bidders. A repeat customer is much easier to develop than a new customer.

It’s a waste of time and money to post an elaborate auction listing if you are the only one who knows that it is there. Don’t overlook or underestimate these powerful grassroots marketing campaigns when you are looking to drum up bids on your online auctions and increase your eBay profits.

Doug Feiring is the creator of http://www.AuctionLink.to – A free service that provides short web addresses that automatically link to an eBay seller’s current auction listings.

HD DVD Players: An Introduction

January 11th, 2010

If we take a look at the way the home video technology has progressed over the years, we will be amazed at the extent to which it has changed in such a short period. The VHS (Video Home System) technology brought motion pictures into our living rooms and bedrooms. It was followed by the CDs, VCDs, and SVCDs that were more expensive, but provided excellent quality and utility. This was followed by the DVDs and DVD players that took the market by storm and became the most preferred mode for recording and viewing of movies. Most recently however, the latest technology that has joined the race is HD DVD (High Definition Digital Video Disc), that has much higher storage capacity and enhanced quality attributes.

Correspondingly, there has been a similar evolution in the digital data storage and handling industry. This journey started with the floppy, followed by the CDs, the laser discs, the DVDs, and then the HD DVDs. Data storage and handling are a field by itself and has grown at a phenomenal rate.

VHS

The first step towards home theater was the Video Home System (VHS), introduced in September 1976. It was developed by JVC along with some licensing agreements with Sony. The VHS is a recording and playing standard for the Video Cassette Recorders, well known all over the world as the VCRs. The VHS could record and play back all the analog television signals in existence at the time it was devised. By today’s standards, it is one of the poorest quality video formats. The video recording cassette being big, its recording camera was also big and cumbersome. This led to problems of handling and transportation.

The VHS-C is the Video Home System-Compact, which is the same in quality as compared to the standard VHS, that is, half inch size and 240 lines of resolution. But as the name suggests, it is more compact and allows for the video camera to be lighter, smaller, and more convenient. The VHS-C has to be placed in a regular VHS sized case to enable it to be played on the VHS player. The 8mm VHS tapes are smaller in size and are very convenient to use in recording cameras, but are not compatible with the regular VCRs and cannot be played directly on the VCRs.

CD and VCD

The Compact Disc (CD) is an optical disc that is read by a laser. It is a polycarbonate disc designed to store data, music and video formats. These were played on CD players and were of the CD-R and CD-RW type in particular. It was designed by Philips and Sony in 1988. In 1993, Matsushita, Philips, Sony, and JVC introduced a CD format that could hold a full- motion video. It was called the Video CD (VCD) or the compact disc digital video and had a standard digital format for storing video on a compact disc. These VCDs could be played on VCD players and computers. A video CD can hold VHS-quality video of 74 minutes and has a CD-quality sound using MPEG-1 compression. The VCDs were very popular in the Asian countries due to their affordability factor, but did not get much popularity in the U.S. or Europe.

The low cost of media resulted in rampant unauthorized copying of movies and was hence not widely supported by the United States entertainment fraternity. The Super Video CD introduced later using the MPEG-2 compression was of better quality, but its playing time got diminished to 35 minutes. A DVDV or double VCD had also been designed, in which, a regular CD was ‘Over-burned’ to incorporate 100 minutes of video.

DVD and HD DVD

The DVDs came into the market in 1997 and were an instant success. This was mainly because of the reason, that even their cheapest version was capable of giving a better picture and sound quality than a VHS, and could process information much more effectively than CDs. With a DVD played back on a DVD player, a consumer could have a much better home entertainment experience. DVD players have been designed to play multi region DVDs, and can playback any TV standard like NTSC, PAL or SECAM. The DVD players are compatible with a wide range of media such as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, MP3, DivX, and many more.

Riding on the success of the DVD market, the HD DVD or High Definition DVD was introduced in 2005 and was an adaptation of the existing basic structure of the DVD. The HD DVD has a greater storage capacity and can provide better audio and video quality as compared to a DVD. All this is achievable at a marginal cost increase, mainly because the HD DVD can be manufactured using the existing manufacturing facilities for DVDs. This affordability factor is a great contributor to the success of HD DVDs. The HD DVDs are available in ROM, readable and re-writable formats. The HD DVD players are designed using all the features provided in the DVD players. The HD DVDs are integrated with a state-of-the-art content protection technology which is unique to this medium.

The storage capacity is 15 GB for single layer, 30BG for dual layer, and 45GB for a triple layer HD DVD. Also it uses highly sophisticated compression techniques using MPEG-4 for increased capacity. A 15 GB HD DVD can store a full movie and incorporate additional features, with space to spare. Whereas as 30 GB HD DVD can store three movies of 150 minutes each and provide the high definition quality of playback. These features make HD DVDs a favored medium for storage and viewing of movies. With the widespread support from the entertainment industry leaders and the high quality service provided by HD DVDs, they are certainly poised for a highly successful stint.

Short Selling for Investors

January 11th, 2010

Shorts. Let’s see. If there are shorts there must be longs. Which is best? Longs or shorts?

If you are trading in the stock the stock market experts like longs better than shorts. If you are “long” that means you own stock and that is “good”. If you are short you have sold stock and that is “bad”. At least that is what Wall Street preaches. And why do they want to make you believe this and is it true? Let’s examine the facts.

Today I hear stories on the financial news and there are articles in the paper that people who are “short” driving the market down. They have sold more stock than they own and this is causing the market to collapse. I even hear that Congress is trying to pass a law that will not allow people to sell short. They are blaming hedge funds who are allowed to sell short. The basic flaw in this concept is when a short sale is initiated it must be done on an up tick. That means the stock must be going up in order to make a “short” sale. No short sale may be made to pressure the market down. That is a fatal pin in the balloon of that lie.

There are reasons people will make the sale of a stock. If you own it you may just need the money now or if it is going down you may not want to lose money should the downward trend continue. There is on old saying in the market – “the trend is your friend”. If you see a stock that is declining you may want to sell it first and when it declines further you will buy it back at a lower price later on. This actually puts a floor under that stock because some time in the futures you MUST buy it. Whoever is doing the shorting does not matter whether it is an individual or a hedge fund. They are actually doing two things that are both good for the market. They are providing a future buy to support the price at a lower level that keeps it from going lower and they are providing liquidity to the market.

When you buy long you want it to go up so you can sell it later at a profit. When you sell short you sell it now with the idea of buying it back after it declines. Both are driven by the profit motive. How can one be good and the other bad? It is like saying there is good electricity and bad electricity.

If company CEOs don’t want people to short their stock I suggest they look in the mirror to find out who is at fault. The CEO is not running his company properly and that is why the stock is declining. No outside person or group can drive a stock lower that is making a good profit. There is a good reason for the price decline.

Buying short does not put the market down. The ultimate outcome of a short sale (covering the short) is very positive for the market.

The Hidden Law

January 5th, 2010

THE HIDDEN LAW
When you were at school your teachers, unknowingly, did you a disservice by only revealing half the truth about the world. The consequences of imperfect knowledge are truly devastating, as you will learn.
Welcome to a different type of lesson. An orthodox school curriculum assumes that the world is explainable. To be understandable, the world has to be comprised of chains of causes and effects. You know the kind of thing: this causes that, that causes the other, the other causes something else and something else causes the final outcome. If we have infinitely accurate information about each stage in the chain we can predict an outcome – and this outcome is really a jumping off point for further stages in the chain. Tracing chains of causes and effects increases our sense of security and makes the world appear predictable and understandable.
Foreseeable chains of causes and effects are not the only way things happen in this world. There are also LIVING TRENDS. Living trends differ from chains of causes and effects in that they are inherently surprising – that is to say, they have outcomes that can only be experienced as surprises. It is very difficult to become an expert on such will-o-the-wisp phenomena. Therefore, the knowledge of living trends is not on the school curriculum. In fact there tends to be no interest in them or even an emotional denial that they exist at all. But they do exist and we are all in the grip of them.
So what is a living trend? It is a pattern of development that spontaneously emerges, apparently without a cause, from the natural world. There is a rapid inflationary phase, a plateau phase of unpredictable length and a sudden surprising reversal of the trend. Participating in a living trend gives a feeling of being in a comfortable routine leading to a secure outcome. However, all the time you are heading for an unpleasant surprise. Let’s have an example. Consider investors in the stock market. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, confidence appears. This is reflected in rising prices. There is a rapid inflationary phase wherein stock prices rise to unrealistic levels. Then the acceleration of confidence tails off and remains at a given high level, as the plateau phase is entered. An unpredictable moment arrives when all confidence drains away, prices plunge and there is a big shakeout of the market.
The thing that makes people available to living trends is ‘IMPERFECT KNOWLEDGE’. All of the investors have only a partial understanding of the economic realities behind the share prices. Their individual notions of what is true increase the sum total of chaos and disorganization within the overall scenario and it is out of the principle of chaos that living trends make their impromptu emergence. We are told that ‘the Truth will set us free’. What is meant is that the Truth will set us free from participation in living trends. This is why successful market speculators and entrepreneurs often come from the ranks of those who performed rather badly at school. They know they don’t know anything and that insight makes them more likely to intuit the truth of beguiling living trends in the market.
Another classic example of a living trend is one that is described in the New Testament Gospels and which gripped the life of Jesus. He, unlike the ordinary person, appeared to be fully aware of the ‘power’ in which he was caught up and did nothing to save himself from the negative surprise to come.
To possess a mind programmed with half the truth makes you available to living trends without your being aware of it. Your days at school furnished you with imperfect knowledge of how the world of everyday life functions and you naturally became a sitting duck for passing living trends. These living trends are ‘powers’, ‘forces’ or vortexes of disembodied ‘intent’. Science knows nothing of them and yet they most definitely operate a blind conspiracy against the whole human race, causing individuals and nations to fall from grace.
Living trends are just waiting for us to stray across inner thresholds within ourselves. A threshold is crossed when we stray: from ‘preference’ into ‘desire’; from ‘love’ into ‘lust’; from ‘caution’ into ‘fear’; from ‘courage’ into ‘recklessness’; from ‘gentleness’ into ‘weakness’; from ‘freedom’ into ‘anarchy’; from ‘thrift’ into ‘greed’; from ‘respect’ into ’servility’; from ‘ambition’ into ‘ruthlessness’; from ‘friendship’ into ‘infatuation’; from ‘confidence’ into ‘ego mania’ etc. We don’t choose to cross these invisible lines. Instead, we have diminished responsibility because we do not understand the threat posed by living trends. There are limits to all development and as soon as we cross a given threshold we expose ourselves to being drafted by a living trend into a madcap excursion whose destination is a negative surprise. Individuals, nations and species have been driven to extinction because they did not understand this one thing.
There is however a single hope and that is the putting into practice of an unwritten law that hides behind the visible appearance of the world. That law says ‘Tap the world lightly’. It is a hidden law that I personally would like to write across the sky in great big letters: ‘DO NOT GO BEYOND WHAT IS JUST ENOUGH’. Here endeth the lesson.

Why Journal Writing On The Web? Blogs Are Journals Giving Anyone An Identity, And An Awesome Forum

December 31st, 2009

Journal writing used to be a private, personal experience done late at night, scribbling hardly legible thoughts and daily occurrences down on paper amidst the haze of a barely lit room. When read over on a later date one could find connections and coincidences that sometimes brought deeper insights into the meaning of life. Also, old ideas could be rekindled that otherwise may have been forgotten forever.

In the 21st century a strange new type of journal writing is becoming prevalent in contemporary society. Called Blogs, these are journals used by the masses. Why are people sharing their thoughts instead of keeping them private like the days of old? These journals are found on the World Wide Web and can be used for a number of purposes. The Web is a public sphere and human souls are realizing that sharing their ideas and beliefs can have that same epiphany type of effect on others as the old type of journal had on the personal writer. People are also feeling that they have an identity, and putting it on the Web is a great way of expressing themselves. Anyone can do it, and besides words, visuals can also be integrated into the journal, often making the Blogs very appealing to readers/ viewers.

Blogs are becoming an excellent way of sharing information on any and every subject. Instead of searching Google for general sites about surfing, or 60’s music, one can go straight to a Blog on the subject in question and read daily thoughts and ideas by others with the same interest as well as expert points of view. If you own a business, you can see what entrepreneurs already based in your proposed field feel about the industry. As it’s a journal structure, the reader can see how certain individual’s beliefs have changed over time.

As the world around us is constantly in transition, humans have always looked for better ways of living and growing as a species. The Information Age has helped our society in innumerable ways. On-line journals are becoming the next step in giving voice to every person who has access to a computer and the Net. As well as putting one’s identity ‘out there’ with the masses, people are hearing the inner workings of minds with similar interests. Blogs are a phenomenon helping to create a more interconnected, socially aware global community.

A Fundamental Guide To Purchasing Sat Nav Systems

December 20th, 2009

A Sat Nav system can save you a considerable amount of time when on the road. Whether you are departing on a very long journey or travelling to the office Monday to Friday, a first-class GPS system is priceless. However, before you acquire a TomTom or other navigation unit, consider how often you will use it. If you only intend on needing it for family journeys, then you will obtain a completely different system than you would if you aim to use your device each and every day.

If you are going to be using your navigation unit mostly for family journeys where it is likely for you to have another person to help you navigate, then you possibly do not require a device that comes pre-installed with speech activation. Your passenger will be able to press buttons & type in destinations in order for you to focus on driving carefully. Whereas, if you plan to use your GPS unit for solo business trips, it is advised to consider getting hold of a satellite navigation system with voice capabilities. That way, you can go through inner-city & keep both hands on the wheel whilst entering or editing your end destination. A lot of makes of satellite navigation units, such as Binatone, have options available both with & without voice activation.

Obtaining the most suitable GPS system, can make a very long trip in the car a great deal more tolerable for both you and your other occupants. Instead of a general voice providing you orders, quite a few products offer comical or celebrity voices which you can choose from. If your occupants require a break during your expedition, a satellite navigation system can help you find the best place to get a nibble to eat & stretch your legs. When you are all set to return to the trip, your unit will work out your new course and get you back on your way without any concerns. This means no more staring at maps and atlases each time you stop for a break.

For the driver, a trustworthy satellite navigation system can save you a lot time in the morning commute to drive. Lots of the more expensive products provide real-time traffic notices. If traffic is jammed due to a smash or engineering works, your navigation machine will put forward a different route. These traffic updates can save you a extensive amount of time in gridlock traffic, therefore getting you to your work on time.

Regardless of how you plan on using your Sat Nav system, there is a device that will suit your needs perfectly. Make sure that you examine all your options carefully prior to you making your final choice. Your Sat Nav system will be there no matter where the road takes you. Find a diverse selection of technology products such as; sat navs, dab radios and ipods from leading brands online.

An Essential Guide To Purchasing The Most Suitable Netbook Computers

December 17th, 2009

With the many advancements coming about in consumer electronics almost every day, very few have proved to be more convenient and useful than the introduction of the netbook computer. The size of netbook computers is the foremost reason that makes them so needed to the average computer buyer or organisation. Where laptops are much too large to fit correctly on most people’s laps, netbook computers provides the perfect size & portability. Possibly the best example to show this would be on either a train, or airplane, while going to, or from your work. In these instances, a netbook computer is without a doubt the more handy hardware to purchase, regularly being more than half the size of the standard laptop computer. Find a large assortment of technology products such as; netbooks, ipods and digital photo frames from leading brands online.

The size of these netbook computers brings to light worries with regards to their screen resolution. With such a very small size, comes a small screen, so you may well want to make sure you get a particular netbook computer that has a sharp contrast ratio, & high resolution.
